ADVICE
THE DISCRIMINATION LAW ASSOCIATION IS NOT AN ADVISORY ORGANISATION IN ITSELF AND CANNOT PROVIDE ADVICE TO INDIVIDUALS DIRECTLY.
The aim of this advice sheet is to provide a starting point for those individuals seeking help with a complaint relating to discrimination.
Where to go
Free general/initial advice (and in some cases further representation) can be given by:
- Citizens' Advice Bureaux (CAB) - Again details may be found in your local telephone directory, or visit the National Association of Citizens' Advice Bureaux (NACAB) website at www.adviceguide.org.uk to find out which is your nearest.
Other suggested (free) sources of assistance in discrimination cases may be:
- Trade Unions (if you are a member and the complaint relates to your employment).
- Racial Equality Councils - Details of these may be found in your local telephone directory. (Dealing with complaints of racial discrimination only.)
- Law Centres - Again, details of these may be found in your local telephone directory.
- Legal Protection Insurance - It is worth checking whether you have Legal Protection Insurance, this might be part of your Home Contents Insurance Policy. If you do, you may be able to get legal help via this policy.
Also consider:
- The Community Legal Service Fund - If you are on a low income or unemployed, you may be able to get assistance via the Community Legal Service Fund (used to be Legal Aid). This fund is available through some solicitors. A directory of solicitors who operate under the scheme is available. Your local CAB should have a copy.
